SONIA RYKIEL

Sonia Rykiel opened her eponymous Left Bank boutique in 1968, selling the sought-after knitwear she first began crafting earlier in the decade. Those knits would include the iconic, shrunken “Poor Boy” sweater, which would grace the cover of ELLE and ultimately launch her career. The first designer to print words on her pullovers, Rykiel was also known for her inverted seams, and a love of stripes and bows. Now under the design direction of Louis Vuitton vet Julie de Libran, Sonia Rykiel has been synonymous with feminine polish and French cool since its beginnings. De Libran imbued her impressive debut with easy confidence, turning out covetable denim overalls, effortless pinstriped suiting, and those signature house stripes, reimagined as textural knits.
