An Interview With: Ellery’s Kim Ellery

Balancing between deliberately masculine motifs and feminine silhouettes, Ellery exudes a rectilinear character with a bohemian tinge that inspires women from season to season. The reason behind the Australian designer’s success is simple: the brand represents a new version of femininity consonant with the spirit of the times.
By Ainur Imanbayeva.

The history of this incredibly successful Australian brand begins in 2007 when its designer and creative director, Kim Ellery, left the fashion publishing world to establish a brand of women's clothing using the rich experience and knowledge she’d acquired after years spent working for fashion magazines.

Reminiscent of the 60s and 70s’ retro style with a definite modern touch, Ellery stands out thanks to its clear lines, easily recognizable silhouettes, and cascades of frills. It won the hearts of countless trendsetters and global celebrities alike - from Solange to Rihanna as well as Cate Blanchett and young actress Elle Fanning. Keep reading to find out more about the brain behind the brand!

- What would you say is the ethos of your brand?
Empowering women through design. I want to make clothing for intelligent women - I want to give them something unique to wear and feel amazing in. Ellery is about the combination of volume with nostalgic silhouettes. There is always a slight retro-nod.

- What is the inspiration behind your Pre-Fall collection?
Pre-fall was inspired by a curator and her personal collection.

- What is your first fashion memory?
I was a very very quiet child and grew up in remote Western Australia, far away from any fashion influence. My mum tells me a story that she feels defined my first reaction to anything fashion related. I was 5 years old at the time and at a local shopping mall. I had spotted a red polka dot skirt in a store that I knew I had to have. My mum swears this was the first tantrum I ever threw and I protested by sitting at the rack of clothes and crying until she bought me the skirt!

- Living or deceased, who are your style icons (and why)?
Tilda Swinton, Rei Kawakubo and Chloe Sevigny. All strong, independent and intelligent women with a clear style identity.

- What is your favorite fashion decade (and why)?
Forever the 1970’s, as a brand built on the foundation of the flare. I have recently enjoyed exploring the 1960’s and a neater, shorter, slimmer silhouette. Watch this space.

- What is your secret talent?
Interpretive dance and parmesan pasta parties.

- What is your daily morning ritual?
I meditate, drink green tea, dabble in some yoga and leisurely read my emails.

- What are you currently binging on Netflix/Hulu/AmazonPrime?
Bloodline - I love Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn, and of course, Chloe Sevigny. The plot is so suspenseful, yet believable. I’m hooked.

- Which international city/country feels most like home to you (and why)?
I have made Paris my home over the past 2.5 years and am constantly inspired here. Growing up in a comparatively ‘new’ country (Australia), I feel like there is still so much digging and discovering to do within such a historical city.
