Rick Owens

Established in Los Angeles in the mid ‘90s, Rick Owens’s namesake label first showed in 2003 in Paris, the city the California-reared designer now calls home. A mix of glam and grunge—“glunge,” as Owens calls it—his collections have garnered a cult following, known for their strictly muted color palette, directional draping and relaxed luxe. Lending a rock-n-roll aesthetic to sumptuous silks, cozy cashmeres and supple leathers, Owens creates the kinds of pieces that become edgy-elegant wardrobe go-tos, season after season. A 2002 recipient of the CFDA’s Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent, Owens counts fashionable fans like Ashley Olsen, Courtney Love and Rihanna.

Rick Owens: Casual pieces with a grunge-meets-glam aesthetic

Founded by Richard Saturnino Owens in 1994, the label was first intended to sell exclusively to Charles Gallay, a pioneering LA retailer who kept Owens in business for years. In 2001, Rick Owens partnered with the Eo Bocci Associati group to develop and expand the Owenscorp Company, enlisting fashion icon Kate Moss to pose in one of his leather jackets for an editorial shoot with Corinne Day. His first collection ran in 2002 at New York Fashion Week, with Anna Wintour naming him as one of her most fabulous recent discoveries.

Rick Owens: Taking grunge-glam to new levels

Adhering to a truly minimalist colour scheme, Rick Owens has brought out a range of avant-garde statement pieces that work flawlessly with simply wardrobe staples. His Naska leather jacket blends in perfectly with textured leather leggings and a long-sleeved turtleneck, while leather creeper boots and faun cotton shirts worn with cashmere wrap cardigans make for a high-style approach to a super-comfy ensemble. Bringing in elements of grunge and gothic, this California designer has taken the recent growing trend of casual-luxe to new heights with his acute and progressive sense of style.
