36 Hours with
Brock Collection

Kris and Laura—the husband-and-wife team behind Brock Collection—share a day-and-a-half of their busy lives. As told to India-Jewel Jackson

Sunday
couple

7:30 A.M. We live on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach; we absolutely love the marina’s charm. First thing on Sunday mornings, we usually have coffee in our backyard, overlooking the boats in the harbor. When we’re done, we wake up our three-year-old son Charlie. While he plays with his toys, Dad and I set the table and make Charlie’s all-time favorite breakfast: chocolate chip pancakes.

10:00 A.M. Time to squeeze in a weekend workout! I go to my favorite kickboxing class, and the boys head over to Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy, where Charlie gets to learn the importance of discipline—he loves it and really looks forward to class each week.

12:45 P.M. Our muscles are sore and appetites are soaring—time for lunch! We head to our favorite diner, The Galley in Newport Beach. Charlie gets a grilled cheese sandwich and shares a chocolate shake with Kris, while I order a salad and a latte. Charlie entertains us with funny jokes before Kris and I chat about our upcoming summer plans, including a family vacation in Miami, business trips to New York and Europe, and a visit to Corpus Christi, Texas to see family.

2:00 P.M. After lunch, we typically hop on our bikes and ride over to the beach. (The wonderful weather is one of the best things about living in southern California!) We slather on the sunscreen, lie down our towels, and spend the afternoon lounging and hanging with friends. Kris takes pleasure in documenting the day with his Leica film camera.

5:20 P.M. When the sun starts to set, we bike over to the local fruit and vegetable cart on Balboa Island to pick up fresh produce, before heading home to prepare dinner. Kris and Charlie fire up a couple of steaks on the grill, while I whip up a penne pasta filled with fresh peas, parmesan, lemon rind, and cream served over a simple arugula salad. Kris drinks a Pacifica while I sip a glass of Sauvignon Blanc—both beverages are far less refined than Charlie’s virgin cocktail we fondly refer to as “dino juice.”

6:30 P.M. Our best friends drop by just in time for dessert—ice cream and fresh berries. Everyone gathers around our backyard fire pit to chill and listen to Fleetwood Mac tunes on Spotify. (Some Sunday evenings we laugh for hours and sip margaritas until the wee hours under the moonlight—total bliss.)

8:00 P.M. It’s Charlie’s bed time, and a fun bubble bath is in order. Once he’s squeaky clean, we put on his dinosaur pajamas and tuck him in with a reading from a darling collection of hilarious stories written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Alex Scheffler called “Charlie Cook’s Favorite Book.” I purchased them last time I was passing through London at the Heathrow Airport. Once he’s sound asleep, I enjoy some me-time by reading a book for myself entitled “Men Explain Things to Me” by Rebecca Solnit. Kris preps for the week by getting a head start firing off some emails.

Monday

7:00 A.M. Early bird Kris wakes up first and heads straight to Al’s Cappuccino to pick up breakfast—iced coffees for us, a peach smoothie for Charlie, and acai bowls for all three. We like to have breakfast as a family before heading in to the office, but we usually take some time after eating to reply to emails on our phones.

7:50 A.M. With a busy day ahead, Kris dresses Charlie in the outfit I laid out the night before, while I slip into an easy Brock dress, or Brock blouse and denim combo. After dropping Charlie off at school, it’s straight to our downtown L.A. headquarters, where we manage the development of the collection, production, sales, and marketing.

office

9:00 A.M. Every day in the office is different, and it’s so important that our team love their work environment—both visually and in terms of the general ambience. There’s always fresh flowers in the studio, which we’ve decorated with French and Gustavian antiques. (And as this is L.A., someone’s dog is always running around the office!) Once the whole Brock team has arrived, we have brief meeting to ensure a productive start to the week. Next up? Development and production fittings, which is where we get to see the designs we’ve created come to life and analyze with precision what needs to be tweaked. The best part of our job is getting to do what we love with people we love.

1:00 P.M. For lunch, we sometimes take meetings at Sugar Fish, but usually we walk over to Whole Foods as a team to get some nourishing takeaway. We are very much like a family in the office, and we believe fostering strong, healthy relationships with the people on your team is a vital component to producing the quality work we strive for. When everyone comes back from lunch, we all sit at the table for a few moments to chat briefly about our weekends.

2:00 P.M. We jump on the phone with our New York team to get PR updates, before catching up on the production of our upcoming NYFW runway show, and the planning of buying meetings in New York and Paris post-fashion week. Another meeting follows directly after; now it’s a chat with sales to discuss projected retail shipping deadlines.

fitting

4:30 P.M. Time for a well-deserved coffee break, then straight into product development reviews for the upcoming season. This is always very exciting because we get to witness how things progress from one season to another. One of my favorite parts of the process of building a collection is allocating bodies to fabrics; it’s something that’s continually evolving, but here I am imagining all of the garments we construct in fabrics for the first time. I’m usually listening to Harry Nilson’s “Everybody’s Talking at Me” or Bob Dylan so as to really be in my zone.

5:50 P.M. Kris and I drive leave separately, as I go home earlier to greet Charlie with a big bear hug. We’re not in the mood to cook tonight, so we’ll bike over to the ferry to and grab dinner at Sapori. It’s a fitting end to a productive day spent with our other love, Brock Collection.
